MEA Issues Letter to Minister of Environment, Conservation & Parks re delays in approving MCEA Amendments

July 21, 2021

On July 22, 2021, the MEA issued a letter to the Honourable David Piccini, Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks regarding the significant time that has passed for the approval of the proposed amendments to the Municipal Class Environmental Assesment (MCEA).  The MEA, with the support of other associations, has been working cooperatively with the Ministry for well over 2 years to develop these amendments .  While we are led to believe the approval may be iminent, there is no clear commitment from the Ministry on an approval date.

The letter was co-sgined by our colleagues at Regional Public Works Commissioners of Ontario (RPWCO), Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA), Ontario Water Works Association (OWWA) and Ontario Home Builders Association (OHBA); they all agree with the MEA that the amendments need to be approved without any further delay.  To see the letter, please CLICK HERE.

The MEA encourages Ontario municipalities to write to the Minister as soon as possible expressing concerns about the length of time that has passed to approve the amendments.  We believe many municipalities may be holding back on projects pending the approval of the MCEA amendments or would benefit from the clarity and project classifications proposed in the amendments.
