Play a key role as a Professional Engineer in Markham’s planned growth and expansion by bringing your municipal land development and transportation experience and engineering expertise to our project team.
Reporting to the Manager, Development Engineering, you will initially be responsible for the coordination and project management of engineering studies related to the planning and conceptual servicing of the future urban areas in Markham, and other intensification areas. As a Development Engineer, you will also be assigned other projects related to land development and departmental policy development.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
More specifically, as a Development Engineer, you will:
•Plan and coordinate the work of consultants in conducting urban expansion and growth intensification studies.
•Give directions to land owners, consultants, and inter-department teams in the processing of major planning applications.
•Review, and comment on, complex planning applications, including Official Plan Amendment, Plan of Subdivision, etc.
•Provide engineering comments in the review of long-range strategic plans.
•Review, and comment on, complex and specialized engineering studies and agreements, and environmental studies, with minimal supervision.
•Negotiate at a senior level with agencies, land owners, developers and consultants.
•Prepare development agreements, cost-sharing agreements, memoranda of understanding and reports to Council.
•Review consultants’ work and invoices prior to recommendations for approval.
Your professional profile as a Development Engineer will include:
•Profession Engineer (P.Eng.) licensure in the Province of Ontario.
•A degree in Civil Engineering or Water Resources Engineering from a recognized university.
•At least 3 years’ experience in municipal land development and transportation.
•Considerable experience working in the municipal sector and understanding of the municipal role in the review and approval of planning applications.
•A working knowledge of the Planning Act, Ontario Water Resources Act, and Environmental Assessment Act.
•Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence and access to a personal vehicle for business purposes. As a condition of employment, you will be required to provide a satisfactory driver’s abstract.

If your knowledge of transportation infrastructure maintenance is coupled with the ability to read and interpret plans and drawings for fieldwork, consider joining the City of Toronto as a Field Investigator (Roads Inspector) in one of these opportunities.
As a member of the Road Operations team, you will be responsible for responding to all customer service inquiries related to the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of transportation services infrastructure, such as road maintenance, winter control, utility cuts. As a Field Investigator (Roads Inspector), you will also be required to patrol City right-of-ways to ensure that they are in a safe condition and free from hazards to the public.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Your primary responsibilities as a Field Investigator (Roads Inspector) will be:
• Recommends solutions for maintenance and/or repair work.
• Perform patrol functions or the inspection of transportation infrastructure , such as sidewalk patrol, traffic signals, signs and pavement markings, street lights and patrol for winter and summer maintenance activities.
• Ensures that provincial minimum maintenance standards are adhered to, and maintains accurate records of action taken to mitigate deficiencies and follow up.
• Make minor repairs (i.e., fills small potholes, clears catch basins, etc.).
• Maintains accurate records of calls made and work performed.
• Investigates claims, prepares reports and represents the City in legal proceedings.
• Performs other related duties, as assigned.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
Your application for the role of Field Investigator (Roads Inspector) must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
• Completion of a Secondary School Diploma.
• Demonstrated thorough knowledge of all transportation infrastructure maintenance methods, procedures and policies.
• Ability to read and interpret plans and drawings in connection with fieldwork.
• Possession of, and ability to maintain, a valid Province of Ontario Class "G" Driver's Licence, and qualify for the City's equipment operating permits and requirements.
You must also have:
• Strong problem-solving, conflict resolution, public relations and decision-making skills.
• Ability to perform minor repairs and maintenance as required.
• Alertness and judgement to detect and report probable loss or damage to property.
• Competence to discuss complaints intelligently with the general public and record them in writing.
• Ability to write clear, concise reports and keep records in a legible manner.
• Ability to use a computer and an Automated Customer Service System.
• Physical capability of performing required duties.
• Familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the regulations that apply to this work.
• Must be prepared to work rotating shifts, weekends, overtime and on-call duty.

Put your experience as a Professional Engineer and your degree in Civil Engineering or Transportation Planning to work for the City of Markham, in the delivery of traffic engineering and transportation planning studies and projects.
Reporting to the Senior Manager of Development Engineering and Transportation, you will be an integral member of the transportation planning group responsible for coordinating and managing various transportation planning studies and development-related traffic studies and assessment.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
More specifically, as a Transportation Engineer, you will:
•Provide project management for transportation studies undertaken by in-house staff or consultants.
•Monitor and co-ordinate updates as well as the implementation of various master plans, including the Markham Transportation Strategic Plan and various studies.
•Review, and report on, Master Plan studies by external agencies, e.g., York Region, Metrolinx.
•Manage travel demand forecasting projects and/or oversee technical assessments undertaken by the transportation engineer or consultant, including query and assessment of model outputs.
•Co-ordinate resources and oversee technical assessments undertaken internally or with external resources.
•Review technical assessments and traffic impact studies for secondary plan areas, draft plans, site access studies, and traffic calming, access and circulation assessments.
•Review engineering plans for subdivisions and site plans.
•Co-ordinate with development teams to support transportation reviews.
•Disseminate findings and study implications to senior staff.
•Prepare reports for the manager, senior staff, Council and committees.
•Write reports for area-specific and special studies.
•Prepare proposals and project management of consulting services.
•Respond to studies and queries from consultants, other municipalities, businesses and residents.
•Participate in public meetings, and presentations to residents.
•Represent the City’s interest in technical advisory committees.
Your professional profile as a Transportation Engineer will include:
•Degree in Civil Engineering or Transportation Planning, with a minimum of 3 years of related experience in the field of transportation planning and/or traffic engineering.
•Licensure as a Professional Engineer.
•Excellent customer service, supervisory, written and communication skills.
•A proven ability to oversee the work of junior staff.
•A proven understanding of various transportation assessments.
•Familiarity with travel demand forecasting and basic understanding of various transportation-related software packages (HCS, CCG, Synchro / Simtraffic, Emme).

As an Engineer within our Capital Works Delivery Unit, you will provide project delivery expertise, including project management, contract administration, technical and engineering expertise in the planning, design and construction of multidisciplinary capital works projects, including roads, sewers, watermains, retaining walls, and water and solid waste treatment facilities. You will assume the role of project manager, overseeing, reviewing and directing the work of staff and engineering consultants, and engaging consultants and contractors through the tendering process.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Your primary responsibilities as an Engineer will be varied. Specifically, you will:
•Manage assigned projects, ensuring effective teamwork and communication, high standards of work quality and organizational performance, continuous learning and maintenance of related data.
•Prepare Requests for Proposals, evaluate proposals, arrange for purchases, and monitor the outcome regarding same.
•Ensure that project expenditures are controlled and maintained within approved budget limitations, and assist in preparing capital and operating budgets related to assigned projects.
•Gather and refine the project scope and determine the financial impact of projects or proposals.
•Prepare and inspect drawings, engineering studies, specifications, plans and cost estimates as they pertain to assigned projects.
•Provide technical advice, reviews and expertise, and utilize standard engineering principles and practices to assist in the operation, development and maintenance of works infrastructure and related services.
•Prepare engineering analyses, and evaluate and recommend new systems, work procedures and technologies with the potential to improve the performance of the Division.
•Carry out varied engineering assignments within a broad field of engineering.
•Formulate design concepts for engineering problems and set the project scope and parameters.
•Undertake the testing and implementation of design concepts to meet functional requirements.
•Conduct studies, surveys, research and development for the effective resolution of engineering issues, as well as initiate and lead technical studies and projects.
•Direct project team staff to ensure that timelines are met.
•Secure all engineering permits and approvals as may be required from external agencies.
•Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of technological developments in the field of engineering.
•Represent the City on committees, attend meetings and provide input.
•Liaise with the media, the public, developers, consultants, stakeholders, councillors, other divisions and government agencies about projects, programs and developments.
•Conduct research into assigned areas, ensuring that such research takes into account developments within the field, corporate policies and practices, legislation and initiatives by other levels of government.
•Plan, investigate, and prepare reports and recommendations concerning engineering problems of moderate complexity and/or assist senior engineers in resolving more complex problems.
•Ensure problem-solving by using a combination of standard procedures, modification of standard procedures or methods developed in previous assignments.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
