    The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has an opening for a permanent full-time Engineering Technologist in the Engineering and & Transportation Division. This position reports to the Director, Engineering and Transportation, and is located at Civic Centre, 315 King St W, Chatham. The Engineering Technologist prepares designs and drawings for a variety of Civil Engineering projects, including sanitary and storm sewers, watermain, pumping and drainage works, pavement, curb and gutter, roofing and other tasks; oversees infrastructure and contracts.

  • Reporting to the Supervisor of Infrastructure Management, the Project Manager will be responsible for development of the 10 year non-development capital budget for Water & Wastewater System Services; managing capital needs assessments for various water and wastewater linear and vertical assets in the Regional system. This position will also aid in the development of methodologies, strategies and metrics that enable alignment of asset management initiatives, project performance and risk management processes.

    The Business Improvements and Standards (BIS) unit provides business sustainment support, business improvement and operational support to the capital delivery, engineering review and other engineering support units within Engineering & Construction Services (ECS). The BIS unit closely works with other divisions within the City and plays a key role in developing and implementing new guidelines, standards, specifications, practices and procedures affecting municipal infrastructure. The unit engages in industry consultations to review best practices and emerging trends, while finding and promoting opportunities for improved service delivery.

    As an experienced Engineer in Engineering Support Services, your role will be to provide project management, technical expertise and engineering input in the renewal, development, implementation and maintenance of procedures manuals, design guidelines, construction standards and specifications, tender documents, and capital procurement templates. In your role, you will provide specialized technical advice, undertake research, provide technical training and consult with other City divisions and industry to support the units of the Division.

    Reporting to the Senior Project Manager, Development Approvals and leading by example, you will be responsible for the review and approval of all aspects of municipal infrastructure engineering design, including stormwater management facilities related to development projects. This will include the preparation and implementation of City of Hamilton development agreements. More specifically, as a Development Approvals Project Manager, you will:

    • Facilitate the approval of development engineering review activities and ensure they are delivered in accordance with City and Provincial guidelines, and in a cost-effective, efficient and timely manner, using a “best practices” approach.
    • Put into practice your thorough knowledge and understanding of standards, regulations and by-laws required for engineering approvals.
    • Prepare Conditions of Approval as it relates to municipal servicing for new development, and coordinate clearance of Conditions of Approval that allow for servicing and registration of development lands.
    • Prepare engineering policy and operational reports for senior staff and Council’s consideration.
    • Assist in the development and implementation of the City’s Staging of Development Program.
    • Assist in developing a multi-year capital budget that incorporates infrastructure extension projects to meet the needs of the Development industry and the City.
    • Investigate and recommend innovative/creative procedures and policies for improving the Section’s technical performance.

  • Working with other Western Region Geotechnical, Engineering and Operations staff, you will:

    • Evaluate and monitor pavement conditions • Develop pavement maintenance and rehabilitation strategies • Prepare recommendations for pavement design, rehabilitation and materials utilization services associated with the planning, design, construction and maintenance of highway facilities • Administer engineering consultant assignments
