Background:
This webinar will survey the significant and costly impacts of climate change for municipalities and municipal infrastructure, and introduce through theory and examples approaches to identify and manage climate risks. Infrastructure is essential to community well-being, safety, and economic activity. Right now, the combined effects of infrastructure aging and weathering, rapid development, and accelerating climate change is increasing the level of overall risk from extreme weather and climate variability in Ontario’s regions and municipalities. In this webinar, Climate Risk Institute will review expected impacts and critical areas of risk, and introduce approaches, tools and lessons-learned when it comes to identifying risk and implementing adaptive measures. CRI will also highlight role - and obligations – for professional engineers when it comes to climate change, and point to new opportunities for professional development.
Speakers:
Glenn Milner, P.Eng.
Engineering and Climate Risk Lead. Climate Risk Institute
Glenn is the Engineering and Climate Risk Lead at the Climate Risk Institute. Over the past 10 years, he has worked on climate risk and adaptation initiatives across Ontario, Canada and the United States. As a Professional Engineer, His work extends across infrastructure, ecosystems, stormwater, agriculture, transportation and supporting government in adaptation policies. Glenn has led training sessions on applying climate data for engineering, planning and decision making, and has convened thousands of stakeholders in discussing vulnerabilities and risks, planning, and scaling action through partnerships. Glenn holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Engineering, and a Master of Climate Change from the University of Waterloo.
Kirsten MacMillan, B.A.Sc, B.A., EIT.
Climate and Engineering Analyst with the Climate Risk Institute.
Kirsten is a Climate and Engineering Analyst with the Climate Risk Institute. She has four years of experience focused on improving technical understanding of climate risk to infrastructure through her work both undertaking climate risk and vulnerability assessments and contributing to capacity building initiatives such as training, the development of guidelines and resources, and convening stakeholders. Kirsten holds a dual degree Bachelor of Applied Science (Civil Engineering) and Bachelor of Arts (Global Development Studies) from Queen’s University which provides an interdisciplinary mindset on the technical and social aspects of climate change and resilience. Kirsten has recently contributed to important CRI initiatives including delivery of the Infrastructure Resilience Professional (IRP) courses, flood vulnerability mapping in Durham Region, and a territory-wide risk and resilience assessment in Yukon; use of the PIEVC protocol to support Disaster Risk Management work in The Republic of Georgia and the Kingdom of Lesotho.
