March 1, 2022

On behalf of President Jason Cole, P. Eng, and the MEA Board of Directors, the MEA wishes you a Happy Engineering Day and share the following important milestone and developments within the MEA:

Membership Milestone

The demanding work and dedication of the MEA membership is paying off.  Our membership has been growing tremendously and has now surpassed 1,000 members!!

Strength in membership can only make the MEA more relevant as we move forward.  This is an incredible milestone and the MEA thanks you for being a valuable member of our Association.

Committee Work

The MEA has forty-four (44) committees that oversees various municipal engineering related matters that are facilitated by over 180 MEA volunteers. Most recently, the MEA has recognized new areas of municipal engineering interests and has established new committees in the areas of Active Transportation, Climate Change, Asset Management, and the Excess Soils Regulation.

In addition, the MEA has also recently formed a new committee focused on enhancing the engineering profession within municipal structures.  The committee’s mandate is to improve municipal infrastructure decision making, minimize municipal risk and ensure public safety through the promotion of accountable, sustainable, and professional engineering practices in Ontario.  Its long long-term goal is to promote the inclusion of a professional engineer as a required officer in municipal administration.

2022 MEA Conference

The MEA has hosted an annual conference event since 1960.  The City of Toronto will be hosting the MEA’s 62nd Conference (November 15-18, 2022) at the Chelsea Hotel.  Watch for more information and registration for this momentous event.

Supporting Young Engineers

The MEA values the importance in the education of future municipal engineers and has supported this through a bursary program.  Over the past 14 years, the MEA has awarded over $150,000 in bursaries to the children and dependents of municipal employees across the province who are entering the first year of an engineering program at the university level.

The Municipal Engineers Association (MEA) is a non-profit association representing the interests of public sector professional engineers in the full-time employment of Ontario municipalities and provincial ministries/agencies performing the various functions that comprise the field of municipal engineering.  EITs employed by municipalities, professional engineers employed by a branch of the Federal/Provincial Governments or related municipal organizations and Consultants acting as the engineer-of-record on behalf of a municipality are also eligible for membership.

The Municipal Engineers Association (MEA) was formed in 1974 as a result of the amalgamation of the former City Engineers Association (1946) and Association of County Engineers of Ontario (1951).

Over the years, the MEA has expanded its outreach and influence by taking a lead role in Ontario Provincial Standards (OPS) and the Municipal Environmental Assessment (MCEA) process, including the development of training programs for both.

The MEA also offers a platform for municipalities and consultants to post job opportunities on our “Careers” section of our website, which our members can view or subscribe to for regular updates on job opportunities.

The MEA is also active on LinkedIn and Twitter.
